Team Gilliam- Attraction final film and notes- completed 19.03.21

Attraction Final film

Team Gilliam has officially completed our first group assignment. In this project we were to create a short film based on the word "Attraction" and because of the board nature of attraction ranging from themes of love to visual beauty and so forth we really that a lot of range on what we could do.

With our film we wanted to work with the theme a childhood wonder and stories basing our short of famous children's stories. This also allowed us to work in our own styles and techniques yet somehow all ended up using cut-out animation.

The final project did end up be shorter than the 3 minutes we originally estimated.

For the opening scenes we used the method of stop motion called pixilation in which elements of the real world are used. This helped Juxtapose the 'real word' from the fantasy world within the book.
These scenes were done by Christina Alexopoulos using and old cabinet as a bookcase.
this part was shot into different scenes for easier editing.

Two slightly different versions of the book opening were shot so we could decide which one was better.

First was scene was made by Christina Alexopoulos in which shadow puppets made from black card and paper were place against a lightboard. This scene was based on Alice in Wonderland with the cakes and drink.

Afterward was David Adams scene in which a mixture of paper and clay were used when making the characters which gives unique spin on the other cut-out methods used.
I couldn't find a version of this scene by itself but it's the final version.

This is then followed by David Brawns scene which uses full drawings rather than jointed ones and is based on the Cat in the Hat.

Finally is Rosemary Brown's scene based on the classic tale of Rapunzel. Using a patterned origami paper rather drawings or blank card giving a colourful and playful feel to the scene.

The page turn effect was achieved through manual editing in Photoshop with the pen tool.

Everyone's scenes were then put together in After Effects curtesy of David Adams who took the role of Lead Editor for this project.

For the sound track we used was "The Second Star to the Right" from Disney's Peter Pan. The whole thing working surprising well in terms of timing.
Hopefully, we don't get a into a copyright strike as we are using this for educational purposes but we might go further into copyright and trademarking later down the line as it's a bit of a headache to understand it all.

Due to time and struggling with using our own hardware certain scenes were removed at the last minute this in an unfortunate but necessary part of working within a deadline. It is unlimitedly more important to have a finish project than something that has good part but it incomplete.

Using photoshop David Adams added in a end tile card to make it clearer that this was the end scene.

Of course they're things we would've improved upon if we were do this again namely trying to get through the storyboarding and pre production phase a little faster. While I am unsure as to how tell the other teams have done we are proud to produce our first team project as well as being able to make this in the latter half of a pandemic.
We can only hope to get better as we continue to work together.

Please stay tuned for our next project as we tackle the given theme of Pirates.
